in to northern new jersey. we have a few in western maryland and west virginia. temperature-wise it is really muggy and sticky out there. 81 cambridge at this hour. even in the mid to upper 70s in the shenandoah valley. we are at 79. 84 by 9:00. and this afternoon some scattered storms move north to south. temperatures by five in the upper 80s. time for traffic. >>> good morning. we are keeping an eye on the accident at prince william parkway near the hack kwan river bridge. all westbound lanes, one lane is open. all eastbound lanes are closed. avoid the area. the closures will be in place the next half hour or. so in manassas, an ongoing police activity is disrupting traffic between wellington and nokesville road. that will be in place for a while. avoid the area if you can. interstate traffic on 95, volume is picking up between prince william parkway and lorton, but all lanes are open. up to 395, duke and seminary, volume there as well but no major incidents or accidents reported but a crash in maryland, 270, route 85 off to the right shoulder. we are seeing some traffic b

" in maryland. a double murder. six weeks later another double murder. the victims two sets of mothers and daughters. now investigators may have cracked both cases with one suspected killer. wisdom martin is live with details. >> reporter: sources tell fox 5 they believe the same person is responsible for all four murders and a person of interest is likely to be indicted in one of the cases very soon. karen lofton and her daughter were shot and killed in their home last january. six weeks later deadly force dewitt and her 19-year-old daughter ebony were found in the trunk of a burning car in largo. both women were moms in their 40s who worked as nurses. both had teenage daughters and lived within a mile of each other. sources tell us that it is likely an indictment will be handed up in the dewitt case. the same man is a person of interest in the lofton case. he is in his 20s and already in jail on other charges. >> i think there is a good xhans that they are linked. >> we've been waiting on it all this time. this is a vicious senseless crime that took two beautiful people away that did

of a big rally in washington today. but right now we begin our focus on maryland's weather and traffic. here's howard. >>> good morning. we are looking similar to the last few days in maryland where it is hot and sticky with more thunderstorms here and there, especially this afternoon. looking at things this morning relatively quiet. western maryland seeing a couple of showers this morning. as we start in the 60s and 70s and will climb to the 80-degree mark or so by 9:00 a.m. through midday, the chance of thunderstorms start to increase from west to east to the lunch hour. well though the 80s to 90s. highs topping out low 90s in spots this afternoon with a threat of a thunderstorm or two. >>> a couple of cameras focusing on maryland traffic. we begin with a live shot at quince orchard and clopper road. drivers are stopped at the light. overall no problems to report out this way. as we shift things over to georgia avenue and viersmill looks like the same situation. nice and quiet. and finally all aboard, we are flying over 50 westbound from the bay bridge to bowie toward washington. loo

in forestville, maryland. maryland state police say the 27-year-old man was working on a paving operation on pennsylvania avenue near the beltway. according to police, the victim was crushed between two dump trucks. officers closed one northbound lane of pennsylvania avenue in order to investigate the accident and then police reopened that lane in time for the morning commute. a pleasant surprise in virginia. the state budget now has a surplus of at least $200 million. lawmakers site a jump in tax revenue, and this means a 3% december bonus for state employees. $18 million will go to local school districts, and money will go to the water quality improvement fund. governor bob mcdonald says the commonwealth is not out of the woods just yet. >> while these numbers are a positive sign for our citizens in virginia, there is much hard work to be done, and it is no time to let up on conservative budgeting, and certainly no time to let up on the fiscal discipline that we have tried to bring to state spending. >> democrats in richmond say the surplus is no surprise. they had a that governor mcdon

, maryland. we also understand that you could feel the earthquake also in parts of maryland, virginia, west virginia and pennsylvania. now, in 1990 we had a 2.6 earthquake here. that was the previous record. now, we understand this morning there is no damage reported yet, but we hear people saying things like they heard an explosion. they thought it was a plane or a truck. we even had one of our own photographers call in and say that he was shaken out of bed. all his neighbors were flooding to the street this morning. to one had any idea what happened before the news reports started coming out. so, erica, this is a pretty big deal for these parts. the biggest one ever recorded within 30 miles of washington, d.c. >> and a lot of people keep talking about that today. tara mergener in washington, thanks. >>> now the latest on the disaster in the gulf where there is reason for some hope this morning. the oil has finally stopped gushing from that blown out well. but the next 36 hours of testing the new containment cap will tell the entire story. cbs news correspondent kelly cobiella is on the gu

, maryland. tom fitzgerald is live with more. the neighborhood got good news? >> reporter: we've been here all day. two minutes before we went on the air, traffic lights came back on, and this neighborhood up on river road finally got power back. we just received an updated e- mail from pepco. let me read it to you. i'll get out of the road while we do this. in montgomery county now, there are 20149 customers out of power, out of 300,000 that were previously out. in prince george county, 2746 homes remain without power, out of 220,000 that were out. and in dc, 1,655 homes are without power tonight. and while pepco made good progress over the last couple hours on the situation, the next 24 hours are going to involve some of their most intricate work. and here is why. a lot of outages that are left are because of situations like that, particular lines that have been entwined with trees. when the trees came down, so did the lines. line crews fanned out, are trying to get to the pockets now piece by piece. four days after this massive tree went down on hatting ton lane, pepco lines men started

maryland. numerous calls have been coming in to police and fox 5 news with people saying they felt a rumbling like a passing train. we are asking that you don't call. we know you felt it. we appreciate the calls that have come already. don't call unless you have damage. so far no reports of injuries or damage. tucker joins me now. >>> just amazing. amazing. we can't describe it. a lot of people probably slept through it. for those of us that were wide awake, we were rocking and rolling. i lived in california for a time. i was in a larger earthquake in 89. it was sharp and very noticeable. almost surprised we didn't have any damage across the area. as you said a 3.6. i want to mention quickly that although earthquakes are rare in washington area they are not unheard of. in 93 we had a form near columbia. as recently as 2008, we had a is .8. >> when you say swarm was that a lot of little ones. >> over the course of several weeks, five or six measured. garnered some attention at the time. they were only the .5, 2.7's. this was a 3.6, which is larger. more widespread. >> the star that
